Almost 20 years ago, former 5 Minute Walk Records recording artist Justin McRoberts set out to do something special - write record an EP of raw, original worship music over the course of three days and release it. The Untitled EP ended up being a truly memorable release, and the singer/songwriter has launched a new Kickstarter campaign to create a new follow-up EP in the same vein.
"20 years ago this Spring, I gathered in the room pictured above with my dear friend busbee and recorded the 9 songs that would become "The Untitled EP." We'd written most of the songs for our church community, hoping to counterbalance the ill-effects of a Church-music movement that seemed to be getting bigger, shinier and less human. Without much in the way of editing and fixing, we later released "The Untitled EP" to a very surprising public reception. A whole lot of folks well beyond our small church family picked up the EP and loved it, too. I've often been moved by the meaning and connection listeners found in those recordings. In the years following, busbee and i reminisced off and on about that weekend, those songs and the gift it was to have been part of something that felt so special. On occasion, we'd contemplate revisiting the project somehow. Maybe we'd write and record new songs in the same style? Maybe we'd write a few songs that dug a bit deeper into the deeply human experience of an adult faith journey? On Sept 29 of this year, busbee lost his brief and difficult battle with brain cancer. He was 43. I miss him very much. And along with the grief of losing a dear friend has come the desire to follow through with the conversation we started in the Spring of 2000. 20 years after recording the Untitled EP, I'd like to honor that project, my friendship with busbee and the spirit we captured. I'm Kickstarting a new EP; writing and recording new songs in the same style and spirit as the original Untitled EP. I also plan to include a few songs that dig a bit deeper into the deeply human experience of faith that made the original the special project it is."
